Peter Redgrove
(b. 1932)
A former scientific journalist and editor, the poet Peter Redgrove has a strong interest in the sciences which may have contributed to his belief that poetry can have powerful effects on human beings. According to Redgrove, "If you record blood pressure, skin resistance, pulse rate...when people are listening to poetry, ...you find that there are profound changes...." Furthermore, Redgrove believes that poetry can connect "us with our physiology, with areas of our physiology which we are inclined not to use in daily life."
In addition to his profound poetry, Redgrove has also written nonfiction books and several novels. He has won numerous awards for his work, including England's Guardian Fiction Prize in 1973 and the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry in 1997.
