Adrienne Rich
(b. 1929)
Adrienne Rich's career as a poet can be divided into two distinct stages. During the early part of her career, she wrote neatly crafted traditional verse. In contrast, her later poems are written in free verse and often explore her deepest personal feelings.
Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Rich began writing poetry at an early age. Her first volume of poetry, A Change of World (1951), was published just after she graduated from Radcliffe College. Since abandoning traditional poetic forms for free verse in the early 1960s, she has produced several collections of poetry. Her later books include Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law (1963), The Will to Change (1971), and Diving into the Wreck (1973).
