
Sally Ride
(b. 1951)
Sally Ride graduated from Stanford University in 1973 with a bachelor's degree in English and Physics. She went onto earn a doctorate in physics from Stanford, specializing in X-ray astronomy and lasers. In June 1983, she became the third woman to orbit the earth and the first American woman to travel in a spacecraft. Ride tells how our planet looks from 200 miles up in her essay "Single Room, Earth View."
