Arthur Rimbaud
(1854–1891)
Arthur Rimbaud began his literary career at a very young age. His poetic abilities were first recognized at age five, and he was published at age fifteen. Poet Paul Verlaine mentored the young Rimbaud by introducing him to other prominent poets and encouraging him as he wrote some of his best poetry. Their friendship was tumultuous and ended badly when Verlaine shot his friend. The murder attempt resulted in two years in prison. After being released, Verlaine published Rimbaud's Illuminations, a collection of poetry that earned Rimbaud widespread acclaim and acknowledgment of his great poetic talent.
