Wendy Rose
(b. 1948)

Wendy Rose was born Bronwen (Wendy) Elizabeth Edwards in Oakland, California, to a Hopi father and a Scots-Irish-Miwok mother. Growing up in a city, Rose got to know Native Americans from many different nations. Her background greatly influenced her writing and her visual art. She actively fought for Native American representation within American literature. She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 for Lost Copper. Besides being a poet and an artist, she is an anthropologist who has worked to protect Native American burial sites from developers.
