Chief Seattle
(?–1866)

Chief Seattle was chief of the Dwanish tribe of the northwest United States. When he was a boy, he saw the British explorer Vancouver sail into Puget Sound in 1792. When the Northwest became American territory, he signed the treaty of Port Elliott, which placed the Native Americans on reservations. He said, "It matters little where we pass the remnant of our days. They will not be many." The city of Seattle, Washington, is named for him.
