Karl Shapiro
(1913–2000)

Karl Shapiro has been a college professor, a critic, and an editor of Poetry and Prairie Schooner, as well as a distinguished American poet. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1945 for V-Letter and Other Poems, which draws on his experience as a Jewish soldier in the United States Army during World War II. Shapiro has said that he would like to see the elimination "of the line between poetry and prose."
