Leslie Marmon Silko
(b. 1948)
Leslie Marmon Silko was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and raised on the Laguna Pueblo reservation. In works such as Ceremony and Storyteller, she explores the power of the myths and traditional ritual she learned as a child. Silko has been described as "a child of more than one culture" because she is a descendant of English- and Spanish-speaking settlers as well as of Pueblo Indians. She is considered to be an important artist in the Native American community. She is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and has been a professor of English at the University of Arizona, Tuscon.
