May Swenson
(1919–1989)
May Swenson was born in Logan, Utah, and attended Utah State University. At the age of 30, after working as a newspaper reporter, she moved to New York City. There she worked as an editor and lectured at colleges and universities. Swenson's poems have appeared in many magazines including The New Yorker, Harper's, and The Nation. She has written that enjoyment of poetry is based on our common desire to get through "the curtains of things as they appear, to things as they are."
