Author Biographies

Mark Van Doren
(1894–1972)

Mark Van Doren was a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet born in Hope, Illinois. He was the fourth of five sons in his family and the brother of Carl Van Doren, a historian and Pulitzer prize-winning author as well. Among his collections of poetry are Collected Works and Good Morning: Last Poems by Mark Van Doren. He was a legendary professor at Columbia University for 49 years. Van Doren also wrote critical studies of major writers. In addition, he served in the U. S. Army, Infantry, during World War I and was a participant in "Invitation to Learning," a CBS radio talk show, in the years 1940-1942.
