Author Biographies

Jose Garcia Villa
(1914–1997)

Jose Garcia Villa was born in Manila, Philippines, and immigrated to the United States in 1930. He attended the University of New Mexico, where he began writing short stories and then conducted his graduate study at Columbia University in New York City. Although he began writing short stories, he soon realized that poetry was the best medium for him to express his ideas. Villa has published several volumes of poetry as well as short stories. He was awarded the Guggenheim fellowship in poetry in 1943. He was also the director of the poetry workshop at City College, New York City from 1952 to 1960.
