Eudora Welty
(1909–2001)
Eudora Welty was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, and this environment has formed the backdrop for most of her writing. After college she returned to Mississippi where her first full-time job for the Works Progress Administration took her all over the state, writing articles and taking photographs. Welty's first published short story appeared in 1936, and since then her reputation has grown steadily. In 1973, she was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for her novel The Optimist's Daughter.
