Richard Wright
(1908–1960)
Richard Wright was born on a farm near Natches, Mississippi. He left school early and worked at low-paying jobs. However, his interest in books prompted him to try writing, and in 1940 he published the novel Native Son, which describes the life of a boy raised in the Chicago slums. His wide knowledge of literature enabled him to experiment with different forms.
