old man and child Long before there were books, there were stories—stories that were passed along from one generation to the next by being told aloud. The passing along of stories in this way is called the oral tradition. The oral tradition includes folk tales, myths, and fables. The myths and folk tales in this unit have been written down after being retold for many generations. They provide a sampling of literature from oral traditions around the world.
