Energy Conversions

Energy exists in many different forms. For example, the food we eat contains stored chemical energy. Light is a form of electromagnetic energy and heat is thermal energy. Can you think of other forms of energy?

When energy changes from one form to another, it is called an energy conversion. For example when a plant grows, it converts electromagnetic energy from the sun to chemical energy through photosynthesis. Look at the three illustrations below and choose the correct energy conversion for each one from the pull-down menus.

Energy Conversions

1 The wires bring a certain type of energy to a home. It is converted by the clock to another type of energy.
2 The water heater converts energy as it heats water.
3 The food the student eats is then converted so the student can walk and open the door.

In your notebook, describe any other energy conversions that you see in each of the pictures.

When you are finished, check your answers.

Inside our bodies and all around us, energy is constantly converted from one form to another. The photographs below show more examples of energy conversions. In your notebook, write the energy conversions that are taking place in each of the photos.
