The Respiratory System

the respiratory system labeled

Air is cleaned, warmed and moistened as it passes from the nose through the trachea to the bronchi. Inside the lungs each bronchus divides into smaller and smaller tubes. At the end of the smallest tubes are the alveoli. It is here that the blood picks up oxygen from the air, and carbon dioxide and water pass out of the blood. This process is called gas exchange.
