Persuasive communication is a powerful tool that is useful throughout your life. Persuasive writing gives you an opportunity to make your voice heard and to express your opinion on an issue about which you feel strongly. In a persuasive essay or speech, you present your position on an issue, urge readers or listeners to accept your position, and sometimes encourage them to take an action.

An effective persuasive speech should

  • explore an issue of importance to the speaker, with more than one side, and state a clear position on the issue
  • provide evidence (facts, examples, arguments, statistics, expert opinions, and personal observations) to support your position
  • address the knowledge level, experiences, needs, and concerns of the intended audience while trying to influence them
  • use rhetorical, or speaking, devices to grab and hold the audience's attention
  • contain memorable details and vivid, persuasive language
  • follow a clear, logical organization pattern
