Karlan Ison Sick

Karlan Ison Sick attended the University of Kansas majoring in French and German. After graduation, she married Gary Sick, a naval officer, and lived in Morocco, Egypt, Italy, New York, and Washington, D.C. She taught French for one year in Maryland before beginning a family.

Later, she attended Columbia University's School of Library Service. After 10 years as a school librarian, she joined The New York Public Library in 1981. She has worked in the Bronx since 1984 supervising programming and services for teens in 34 branches. Doing outreach to high schools has been an important and satisfying part of the position.

Active in the American Library Association, she has been a member of several committees including the Margaret A. Edwards Award committee, Best Books for Young Adults, the Michael L. Printz Award, and most recently the Alex award.
