## ¿Cuál es la distancia?

In chapter 12, you have learned to express quantities with numbers above 100. Among other things, this will allow you to talk about distances between places. What follows will put this knowledge to use.

1. In the table below, you will find a list of several cities of the Spanish-speaking world. Your task is to find the distance between your hometown and these cities. To do this, let's visit the Web site called How far is it. This site will give the distance between any two cities in the world. There is also the option of viewing the two cities on a map.

When you arrive at the Web site, scroll down to blanks entitled From and To. In the first blank, enter your hometown and state (e.g., State College, PA). In the second blank, enter the name of each Hispanic city listed in the table below, and then click on the button entitled Look it up! On the next page, the distance between your hometown and the Hispanic city will be given in both miles and kilometers. To see these two cities on a map, click on See these places on the map.

Using the numbers that you gather from the Web site, answer the questions in the table below. When you enter the distances, be sure to type the words and not just the numbers!

2. Now let's double check your results. Find a partner and take turns asking what the distance is between your hometown and the Hispanic cities listed in the table above. When your partner reads aloud his or her numbers, write these numbers down on a sheet of paper. You may follow the sample dialogue given below:

Modelo:

Estudiante A: (writes "6073 km")

3. Finally, based on the distances you have collected, which city is farthest from your hometown? Which city is closest? Again, double check your findings by asking your partner:
