El senderismo en el Perú

According to the reading on page 377 of your textbook, there are many places to go hiking in Spain—more than 8,000 kilometers worth of trails. If hiking is your activity of choice, then you'll be interested to know that the Andes mountains of South America also offer plenty of opportunities. Now let's go on a "cyber-hike" to Peru and find out more!

  1. In this activity, you will be visiting the Web site of Aire Puro: Asociasón de Deportes de Montaña. The club Aire Puro organizes frequent outings into the mountainous regions of Peru.

Lucky for us, the members of the group maintain a Web site with photos and descriptions of past excursions. Your goal in this activity is to explore some of the descriptions of the group's past excursions and to decide which one you and your classmates think was the most interesting.

Before visiting the Web site, you should become familiar with the following vocabulary:
    abrir to open
    caminata stroll
    campamento camp
    esfuerzo effort
    iniciarse to iniciate onself
    por debajo de below
    por encima de above
    recorrido path

  2. Aire Puro organizes hikes at six levels of difficulty. This is an important factor to consider when choosing a hike, since different people are likely to be at different levels of physical fitness. One shouldn't over-exert oneself out in the wilderness!

When you arrive at the Aire Puro Web page, click on EXCURSIONISMO. Next, you will find a chart describing each level of difficulty for Trekking/Excursiones. Use this information to complete the following table. The first column describes the types of activities associated with a given level. In the second column, select the level that corresponds to the description.

  3. Now that you have an idea of how difficult various hikes can be, let's take a look at some of the past excursions that Aire Puro has organized. Use the links the left column of the page for a chart of the activities, photos, etc.

You will need to choose two activities and gather the information required to complete the tables below. In each table, type the name of the activity, the month and year in which it took place, and the activity's level of difficulty. Finally, provide a brief summary of what happened.

Since you're describing what took place in the past, you will need to use the preterite. For your brief description, you might want to use the following model:

    ¿Qué pasó?
Los estudiantes salieron de la Universidad Católica a las 8.
Llegaron al km 68 de la carretera central a las 10.
Después, subieron al pueblo de Ayas.

    Evento 1
    ¿Qué pasó?

    Evento 2
    ¿Qué pasó?

  4. Now it's time to put your skills of evaluation to use! Based on the descriptions that you gave in section C, decide which of the two excursions was the most interesting. Next, survey some of your classmates to find out what they think. Keep track of each response on a sheet of paper. You may want to follow the sample dialogue below in exchanging your information:

Estudiante A: En tu opinión, ¿qué evento fue más interesante?

Estudiante B: La Excursión Lomas de Lachay fue más interesante.

Estudiante A: ¿Cuándo ocurrió (took place) la excursión?

Estudiante B: Agosto de mil novecientos noventa y seis.

    Estudiante A: ¿Qué pasó?

According to the survey data, which event ranks as the most popular among your classmates? Is this the same event that you chose?
