To justify each step as you solve an equation, use deductive reasoning and the properties of equality.

Solve 1 = k/12 + 5. Justify each step.

solution to 1 = k/12 + 5

Remember that an expression like 8 – 3y can be rewritten as 8 + (–3 y) using the definition of subtraction.

Example 5 Using Deductive Reasoning

Solve 8 – 3y = 14. Justify each step.
