Algebra
Chapter 4
Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities

Manufacturers promote their products in many different ways. For example,
the food industry often uses recipes to advertise their products. Use the
Internet to find out what solving equations has to do with chocolate!
Part A, Solving Equations Using Number Sense
1. Hershey Foods Corporation is one of the largest chocolate companies
in the world. Look at their Web site and find their recipe for Perfectly Chocolate chocolate chip cookies.
a. Write an equation relating the number of cups of brown sugar (S)
to the number of cups of flour (F).
b. If your classmates make a double recipe of Perfectly Chocolate chocolate
chip cookies, how much flour will they need? Did you use mental math or
guess and check?
c. How much brown sugar will they need if they use 3 cups of flour?
d. If your classmates use 5 cups of brown sugar, how much flour will
they need?
Part B, Solving Equations Using Graphs
2. Try using graphs to show the relationships between ingredients in
a recipe.
a. Graph your equation from 1a relating the amount of brown sugar
to the amount of flour. Make sure to label your axes.
b. Use your graph to determine how much brown sugar will be needed if
10 cups of flour are used.
c. Is it easier to solve the equation by graphing or by solving an algebraic
equation? Explain your answer.
Part C, Making Connections
3. Write your own equation, based on the Perfectly
Chocolate chocolate chip cookie recipe. Make the equation easy enough
to solve using mental math.
