Chapter 5, Area

Superlesson 5-2, Derivations of Area Formulas

Anthropologists and archaeologists have great interest in studying the Aztec civilization. Below, you will view a map of the archaeological excavations at the rural sites of Cuexcomate and Capilco in the Mexican state of Morelos.

Part A, Assumptions About Area

1. Look at a scale drawing of the Cuexcomate and Capilco at this Web site.

a. Sketch the irregularly shaped region bordering the site and record the true length of each of its sides.

b. Divide the region you drew above into as few rectangles and triangles as possible. Then, use the scale drawing on the web to record the measurements necessary to find the area of the entire figure. Finally, find the actual area of the entire region.

Part B, Planning a Proof

2. Look at the Cuexcomate and Capilco Web site once more.

a. Sketch the border of the site again. This time, divide it using as few trapezoids as possible. You may also use rectangles and/or triangles where practical.

b. Use the scale drawing on the web to record the measurements necessary to find the area of the entire figure. Finally, find the area of the entire figure.

3. Was it easier or harder to find the area of the site using trapezoids? Why or why not?
