Vocabulary Development

Research has shown that direct instruction in vocabulary helps improve reading comprehension. This course provides practical and effective strategies for vocabulary development to improve reading comprehension.

The step-by-step strategies in this course are detailed, guided activities to help teachers implement and reinforce the vocabulary development strands in Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes. Teachers will learn effective uses of a variety of strategies to ensure that all students acquire the vocabulary needed for comprehension of the selections in the program.

The course includes:

• Choosing essential vocabulary to teach for a reading selection
• Teaching essential concepts as well as unfamiliar but non-essential vocabulary
• Strategies for using context productively
• Effective uses of dictionaries, glossaries, and other reading aids
• Strategies to help students study critical vocabulary independently
• Assessments to ensure that students have learned critical vocabulary
