What is MathXL? top of page
MathXL is a powerful online homework, tutorial, and assessment system designed specifically for Pearson Education textbooks in mathematics and statistics. With MathXL, instructors can create, edit, and assign online homework and tests and track all student work in the online class gradebook. MathXL creates personalized study plans for your students based on their test results and offers unlimited (algorithmically generated) practice exercises correlated directly to the exercises in the textbook. MathXL is designed to be used in a lecture, self-paced, or distance-learning course.
Does MathXL automatically come with the text? top of page
No! It requires an additional purchase and is totally OPTIONAL.
How is MathXL delivered? top of page
The complete MathXL experience is delivered online. The practice exercises from MathXL (without the homework, testing, gradebook, and study plan features) can be delivered on a CD product called MathXL Tutorials on CD.
What’s the difference between MathXL & MathXL Tutorials on CD? top of page
MathXL online includes the gradebook and study plan and allows the teacher to assign homework, tests, and quizzes and track their students’ work. Using MathXL, students can generate a study plan for themselves and see all of their results for assigned work. The MathXL Tutorials on CD product is strictly for self-practice without any involvement from the teacher. It includes only the practice exercises and video clips (no animations or eBook). The CD is for individual student use and does not require an internet connection. Students can print or export their results for any particular session, but results are not stored and the teacher does not have access to the work students do using the CD. The CD is a good solution for schools concerned about all students having internet access. The MathXL Tutorials on CD is not currently available for Calculus and Statistics textbooks.
What’s on the MathXL Tutorials on CD vs. what’s in MathXL? top of page
The CDs contain the same math exercises that are in the online course, along with the "Help Me Solve This" and "View an Example" buttons and any available video clips. The exercises are displayed in exactly the same way they are online (only the students don’t need to install the MathXL Player when using the CDs since it's "built-in" to the CD).
Is student work when using the MathXL Tutorials on CD tracked? top of page
In MathXL, all student work is tracked and stored for students and/or teachers to access. Tracking on the CD works in two ways: you can either print out your results for a specific session or export them into a file that can them be imported into Excel. Printed or exported results are for the current practice session only. Closing down the CD ends your session and results are not stored from session to session.
Is registration required for the MathXL Tutorials on CD? top of page
No. Anyone can use the CDs – students don’t have to register and don’t need an access code. The only time students needs to input any personal information is if they want to print or export their results for their current session, in which case they simply enter their name and (optionally) the title of their course.
Can the CDs be networked? top of page
The MathXL Tutorials on CD are meant to be run on individual computers, directly from the CD. They autostart, and there is no installation process.
Is MathXL the same for every book? The platform is the same but since the practice exercises are correlated to the exercises in the textbook, each MathXL site or CD will be different for each book. Supplementary media (videos for the CDs and videos/animations for the online courses) are not available for all books.

MathXL® online is available in Registration Packets of 25 or 100 "redemptions". One redemption is for 1 student for 12 months beginning at the time of registration. [Ex. A packet of 100 redemptions can be used for 100 students for one year (100 x 1) or for 20 students for 5 years (20 x 5).] One instructor code is included with the 25 pack, four with the 100 pack.
