CHAPTER 32: Immune System

32.1 PROTECTING THE ORGANISM

The Bad Bug Book
Was it something you ate? Check out this Food and Drug Administration reference on the bacteria, viruses, and protozoans that cause food-transmitted illnesses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
As the United States' first line of defense against disease, the CDC has one of the best sites for learning about infectious disease caused by viruses, bacteria, or protists. Search their health information files and their statistics site for information about a particular disease.

Squid Enslaves Bacterium
The glowing bacteria that infect the Hawaiian bobtail squid help protect it from nighttime predators. Margaret McFall-Ngai of the University of Hawaii looked at this complex interaction and has come up with a new theory explaining whether the relationship between bacteria and host is mutually beneficial or antagonistic.

32.2 OVERVIEW OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Human Anatomy Online
To get to the interactive tutorial on the endocrine system, click on the green lymph nodes button. Roll over the image, then roll over the multicolored diamonds to learn the name of each structure. Click on the labels that pop up for a longer description of that structure. If the pop-up label has a magnifying glass icon, click on the glass for a detailed diagram of that structure. Pages on related topics are available beneath the graphic.

32.3 ACTIVITIES OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Anatomy of a Splinter
Take a look at animations and microscopic footage of white blood cells finding, eating, and killing bacteria. These movies and illustrations are from Cells Alive.

Antibody Production
Cells Alive also provides this helpful animation and description of how bacteria stimulate B and T cells to produce protective antibodies.

Immunology Tutorial
This well-illustrated tutorial will walk you through non-specific, humoral, and cell mediated immunity, then quiz you on what you've learned. It comes from the University of Arizona's Biology Project.

Lymphatic System And Immunity
This tutorial from a Maricopa Community College instructor describes the lymphatic system, different types of immunity, the immunology of blood types, organ transplants, and immune system disorders. It also links to several immunology resources and to glossary definitions.
Immune System
To get to this part of the BodyQuest human anatomy site, click on Immune System under Find. Here you can learn about the parts of the immune system, view graphics, and test your knowledge by playing a game.

32.4 HEALTH OF THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

Treating HIV
Although there is still no cure for AIDS, advances in drug research are giving new hope to those infected with HIV. Here, online science magazine The Why Files takes a look at the fight against AIDS, explaining how HIV infects cells and what the new drugs do.

Vaccines: How and Why?
This article from Access Excellence describes how vaccines were discovered, how they work, and how they are made. It also links to helpful illustrations and laboratory activities for these topics.
