CHAPTER 34: Nervous System
34.1 SENSING AND CONTROL
- Explore
the Brain and Spinal Cord
- This is an excellent introduction to the brain, spinal cord, autonomic
nervous system, senses, and the effects of drugs on the nervous
system. This page is part of Neuroscience for Kids, a resource created by Eric Chudler, a
professor at the University of Washington. All of the articles
are easy to read and simply illustrated.
- Nervous System
- To get to this part of the BodyQuest human anatomy site, click on Nervous System under Find. Here you can learn about the brain and nervous system, view graphics, and test your knowledge by playing a game.

34.2 NERVES AT
WORK
- Basic
Neural Processes Tutorials
- These tutorials from Hanover College illustrate several concepts,
including:
- Neurons
- This short guide to neuron structure and function starts
with a clickable neuron cartoon. To get to the guide click on 18B. Clicking on a label leads to
further explanations and diagrams. There is also a section on
signal transmission. This guide is one chapter from The
Joy of Visual Perception, an online book by a professor at
York University in Canada.

34.3 CENTRAL AND
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEMS
- Things
That Go Bump in the Night
- Why does our stomach sometimes get queasy when we are afraid?
Take a look at the enteric nervous system, a network of nerves
in our gut that sometimes triggers bowel trouble under stressful
situations. This Why
Files article also takes a look at thrill-seeking behavior.
- Superman
- After actor Christopher Reeves' paralyzing accident, The Why Files
wrote an article on spinal cord research. Read about the headway
researchers are making in spinal cord repair.
- Lobes of
the Human Brain
- Click on a lobe of this brain photo to find out what it is
and what it does. This interactive resource comes from Marymount
College.
- A Gallery
of Mammalian Brains
- The brains of manatees, bats, primates, and other mammals
are displayed here at this University of Wisconsin/Michigan State
University website.
- Neurological
Disorder Resources
- Link to resources about Huntington's Disease, sleep disorders,
epilepsy, and more from this list compiled by Eric Chudler, a
professor at the University of Washington.

34.4 THE SENSES
- The
Joy of Visual Perception
- This handy online book was written by a professor at York
University in Canada to explain our ability to perceive color,
distance, and motion, and to describe the physical, chemical,
and cellular reasons behind each phenomenon. Included in this
book are eye anatomy, an explanation of near- and far-sightedness,
and explanation of optical illusions.
- Psychology
Tutorials and Demonstrations
- The Psychology Department of Hanover College has assembled
links to tutorials in sensory perception, including speech, visual,
and rhythm perception. A couple of the optical illusion links
are featured below.

34.5 NERVOUS SYSTEM
HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE
- The National Clearinghouse
for Alcohol and Drug Information
- A service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services,
NCADI is the world's largest resource for information concerning
substance abuse. Come here for statistics about drug and alcohol
use and health risks, and to search their database for articles
about specific drugs or topics.
- The National Organization
on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
- Perhaps you have seen celebrities Jimmy Smits, Bonnie Raitt,
and Queen Latifah doing public service announcements about the
dangers of drinking alcohol while pregnant. This publicity campaign
was sponsored by NOFAS, which is trying to educate the public
about the number one cause of preventable mental retardation.
Visit their website to find more information about FAS.
- Still Smokin'
- Science magazine The
Why Files turns the spotlight on nicotine. As always, the
Why Files staff explains the biological and social science behind
hot news topics, such as whether nicotine is addictive, tobacco
advertising, and methods of quitting smoking.
