ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION AND TUTORIALS

Human Biology at the University of Virginia
These lecture notes and summaries of recent science articles are from a human biology class. Slides from class lectures are also available here.

Human Biology Lecture Notes
These notes on the major systems of the human body come from The Centre for Human Biology at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. They include:

The THCME Medical Biochemistry Page
Read detailed descriptions of biochemical processes from Indiana State University School of Medicine, including:

Growth & Structure of Meat Animals
This site from the Animal & Poultry Science Center at the University of Guelph in Canada explains meat in great detail.

HHMI Virtual Lab
This is a truly interactive introduction to how scientists use the principles of immunology to diagnose diseases. You will need to add the Shockwave plug-in to your browser before trying to run this virtual ELISA.

Monoclonal Antibody Technology
This article describes how antibodies have been harnessed by biotechnology as research tools and weapons against disease. It also links to a helpful cartoon describing Monoclonal Antibody Production. It was originally published in 1989 by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, but is republished here by Access Excellence.

Poison Ivy: An Exaggerated Immune Response to Nothing Much
Why does poison ivy cause a rash? This article from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst explains terms such as allergic contact dermatitis, delayed hypersensitivity, corticosteroids, and has a list of links to further information.

Development of Vaccines to Infectious Diseases
Students taking Biology 160 at Brown University investigate the development of vaccines for specific diseases and disorders. Their work includes in-depth accounts of the development of vaccines against cancer, HIV, and malaria. All reports are accompanied by illustrations and links to further information.

Steroid Hormones
These lecture notes from a Biochemistry course at St. Edwards University describe steroid hormones in depth, discussing the structure, function, and regulation of the five types of steroid hormones.

Steroid Hormone Receptors
Steroid hormones exert their action by binding to a steroid hormone receptor, then attaching to sequences of DNA to affect changes in transcription. Here, a research group at the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign describes their research on glucocortocoid and estrogen receptors and shows an animation of the estrogen receptor binding to DNA.

Membranes
Information about second messengers, insulin, and growth factors are outlined here with simple animations of the roles of cAMP, inositol triphosphate (IP3), and diacylglycerol (DG) as second messengers. The outline is from NetBioChem, a medical biochemistry resource from Allegheny University of the Health Sciences and the University of Utah.

SOFTWARE AND MULTIMEDIA
Pulmonary Pathology Index
Microscopic and photos of lungs, both normal and diseased, can be found at Web Path, a pathology resource from the University of Utah.

Cow's Eye Primer
Download this interactive tutorial to explore the anatomy of the eye. This stand-alone application comes from the Cow's Eye Dissection exhibit at the Exploratorium.

UniServe Science
Another catalog of science teaching materials, this time from the University of Sydney in Australia. You can find out about media for specific subdisciplines by running a biology resources search. Some of the media is reviewed.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
Clothespin Calesthenics
How many times can you pinch a clothespin in one minute? How about the second minute? This activity explains the difference between aerobic and anaerobic exercise and why rest periods between anaerobic exercises are beneficial.

Educating the Public
This page from the American Association of Immunologists has many creative ideas on teaching immunology and biology to all grade levels. Articles discuss vaccination, specificity, AIDS, and how to get students interested in these topics.

Nutrition Education Materials
These educational materials come from the Food and Nutrition Information Center, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It is a catalog of lesson plans and audiovisuals, available for loan or purchase.

Cow's Eye Dissection
This popular exhibit from San Francisco's Exploratorium comes to life on the Internet. Get tips and instructions on conducting this hands-on laboratory and download the Cow's Eye Primer.

Neuroscience Experiments and Activities
Eric Chudler, a professor at the University of Washington, has come up with fun activities to demonstrate and explore nervous system anatomy, reflexes, the senses, sleep, biological rhythms, and memory (especially helpful to read if you want to improve your memory).

The Access Excellence Fellows Collection
These innovative classroom activities from Access Excellence are grouped by chapter relevance.

Skin, Skeletal, and Muscular Systems

Digestive and Excretory Systems

Immune System

Endocrine and Reproductive Systems
