A Clock in the Rock
Found in the Dust
It is a warm afternoon in the Mount
Blanco region of the Texas panhandle. The paleontologist gently
wipes the dust off the cracked and splintered fossil trapped in
the hardened dirt. She holds the tiny magnifying lens to the fossil
and peers down at what look like teeth. This jaw is not like anything
we know today. The teeth are large, jagged, and sharp. They appear
to be for suited more for crushing than tearing.
With a smile the paleontologist sits back on her heels and calls
to her excavation team "Well folks, here's a Borophagus
bone crusher--we're in the Blancan now for sure. ."
Borophagus? Bone crusher? Blancan? What or where or who
is that?
