Battle of the Trees
Oak v. Cedar
The famous Texas oaks trees are in a fight
for their lives. Early pioneers, especially those who came with
Stephen Austin, would barely recognize the hills they came to
know and love. Early cattle ranchers raised millions of cows in
the sprawling Texas oak woodlands. The trees provided abundant
shade but didn't get in the way of grazing cattle. The wood was
dense and hard. It made good fire wood for cooking and heating.
But now the oaks are in a struggle with a species of juniper called
cedar. The cedar trees are becoming so abundant that the baby
oaks are having a hard time finding a place to grow. The older
trees are suffering from dehydration and beginning to die. It
is a scary situation for the future of the oak trees.
