- Freshwater Field Day
Chapter 35 - The Biosphere
A watershed is a region that delivers water (through streams
and runoff) to one particular river. To locate resources related
to your watershed, visit the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
Surf Your Watershed site.
Learn the name of your watershed by entering your zip code. Then
click on the HUC code (blue number) to access information about
your watershed.
For some additional information about freshwater ecosystems
around the country, visit the following sites:
- Lakes:
- The North Temperate
Lakes Long Term Ecological Research project is an ongoing
study of the ecology of lakes in two regions of Wisconsin. From
this home page you can access information about the lakes under
study, the goals of the projects, summaries of the results so
far, and questions that remain to be answered.
- The Great Lakes border on eight U.S. states and two Canadian
provinces, and are the largest fresh water lake system in the
world. The
Great Lakes Environment will link you to information about
the ecology and biodiversity of this system, as well as data
about declines in Great Lake pollution and other EPA programs there.
- Rivers and Streams:
- American
Heritage Rivers is an EPA site that describes the new
federal program to target particular rivers for clean-up. The
site describes the state of our rivers and what can be done to
restore them to health.
- U.S.Wild
and Scenic Rivers are protected recreational resources. Use
this part of the Great Outdoor Recreation Pages site, to locate
and read about the wild and scenic rivers near you.
- Pacific Rivers Council
is an organization dedicated to the conservation and restoration
of western watersheds. Their site is both information-rich and
visually appealing. There are encouraging reports on how volunteers
are working to restore salmon to the rivers of this region.
