    Diseases transmitted by ticks:
    Lyme Disease
    This site, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, describes the discovery, symptoms, and treatment of Lyme disease. This disease is most common in the northeastern United States, although it occurs throughout the country. Lyme disease usually develops after a person is bitten by a deer tick, an insect that you can learn more about at the Iowa Deer Tick page below.
     
    Iowa State's Deer Tick Home Page
    Photos and movies of deer ticks are available on this Iowa State University page. If you're a resident of Iowa, you can also learn where to send ticks for identification free of charge.
     
    The American Lyme Disease Foundation
    This site has more on tick-borne disease. Here you can find out how to check for ticks, how to remove a tick, and where they are most frequently found.
     
    Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
    RMSF is another disease that is transmitted by contact with ticks. This site from the Center for Disease Control describes the cause, prevention, symptoms, and treatment of this tick-borne disease.

    Yes, there are plague-infected animals in the United States. Visit this site for more information and flea pictures.

    In recent years, outbreaks of the West Nile Virus have threatened the health of many U.S. residents along the Eastern seaboard. This interactive map from the National Atlas of the United States allows you to gather current information on the most plagued states. The map requires the Shockwave plug-in for your browser.
