ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND INFORMATION
AND TUTORIALS
- Cnidaria Home Page
- This site emphasizes the molecular biology of these creatures
and links to sites about the genetics, evolution, and genetic
sequences of cnidarians. It is hosted by the University of California
at Irvine.
-
- Caenorhabditis elegans
- This nematode has been invaluable to the study of developmental
biology. Because of its small size, the lineage of all 959 cells
in this worm's body have been traced back to the zygote stage.
Link to information about the genetics and genome of this well-known
worm from the Worm Breeders Gazette
-
- The Animal
Diversity Web
- This site from the University of Michigan is a rich source
of information about the animal kingdom . You'll find a description
of every phylum, even down through species, from annelids to
zebras.
SOFTWARE AND MULTIMEDIA
- Images
of Insects and Their Relatives
- These slides would be particularly useful in a lecture on
insect development and diversity, since they show various insects
in different phases of their lives. The site also has links for
other terrestrial arthropods, such as ticks and spiders. For
a more animated look, check out Movies
of Insects and their Relatives. Both resources are from Colorado
State University.
PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES
- Eye
to Eye with Garden Snails
- In this activity, students will observe the locomotion, anatomy,
and behavior of snails. It is found at the Access
Excellence Activities Exchange.
-
- National American Butterfly
Association
- If you are interested in joining the NABA to count the butterflies
in your state this year, check out this site. It will give you
the names and addresses of contacts for local chapters in your
state, as well as tips for attracting butterflies to your garden.
-
- WOWBugs
Home Page
- Use the WOWBug, a tiny harmless wasp, in experiments of animal
behavior. This page suggests several activities.
-
- Mimicry:
An Example Of Adaptation
- This is an activity using breakfast cereals designed to show the
importance of mimicry in the insect world.
