    Why bother to inspect meat? As you'll learn here, meat can harbor bacteria that cause sickness and even death. In 1996, new laws were passed to ensure the safety of America's meat supply.

    This site from the U.S. Department of Agriculture includes fact sheets, news updates, information about meats that are being recalled for health reasons, and a hotline number where you can get more information.

    Three universities established this site to provide information about their efforts to conduct extensive investigations into all areas of poultry, beef, and pork production.
