A Protist Investigation
Chapter 15 - Protists
Although protists are tiny, the menace they pose to plant and
animal health can be huge. For a first look at some pesky protists,
take a look at The
Bad Bug Book, brought to you by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
This site is a guide to the many disease-causing organisms and
toxins that can be found in food. Of particular interest is the
section about parasitic protozoa, such as Giardia
and Cryptosporidium.
For more on Giardia, Cryptosporidium, and other disease-causing
protists, use the search function at the left side of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention Home Page. To start, enter
"protozoan" and take a look at some of the articles
that come up.
Information about the health problems of our photosynthetic
friends and how those problems can be prevented or controlled
can be found among the Oklahoma
Extension Plant Disease Publications.
Red tide is a population explosion of a red-colored protist
that can kill fish and shellfish and cause poisoning in humans.
For more information about red tide and other marine menaces,
visit The Harmful
Algae Page. The site includes photos and descriptions of
the harmful species and their effects on both humans and the
environment, as well as a page that identifies areas where outbreaks
are occurring.
