- Pharmacies and Fungi
- Chapter 16 - Fungi
Oh nothere's a fungus among us! In fact, there are many. Fungal
infections range from athlete's foot to yeast infections.
Although fungal infections are not highly infectious, once you
get one it can be difficult to get rid of it. This is because
many of the drugs that work best against fungi can also be somewhat
dangerous for humans. Also, fungi tend to live in parts of the
body where it is difficult for drugs to reach them, such as in
the skin or nails.
To learn more about fungi, both the tasty and terrible, visit
Introduction
to the Fungi, a University of California Museum of Paleontology
resource.
To zero in on the nasty fungi, visit Fungal
Infections, a Singapore site that includes pictures
and treatment suggestions.
Fungal infections can be especially dangerous and even life-threatening
to people who are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
The Fungal
Infections page provides brief descriptions of the fungal
infections that often accompany AIDS and provides links to information
about the drugs being used or tested to treat these diseases.
