Observing Osmosis
Chapter 3: Cell Structure and Function
You have learned that water moves from low solute concentrations to high solute concentrations. You can model the effects of osmosis in a hypertonic solution if you
Try This
- Fill two bowls with water. Add three tablespoons of salt to one of the bowls and label it.
- Slice a small potato lengthwise into several flat pieces.
- Place some of the potato slices into the salt water and the rest of the slices into the plain water.
- After 20 minutes of soaking, take the potatoes out of the water and record your observations.
Analyze Your Results
- How do the two groups of potato slices compare?
- Propose an explanation for any differences you observed.
