Observing Osmosis
Chapter 3: Cell Structure and Function

You have learned that water moves from low solute concentrations to high solute concentrations. You can model the effects of osmosis in a hypertonic solution if you…

Try This

  1. Fill two bowls with water. Add three tablespoons of salt to one of the bowls and label it.
  2. Slice a small potato lengthwise into several flat pieces.
  3. Place some of the potato slices into the salt water and the rest of the slices into the plain water.
  4. After 20 minutes of soaking, take the potatoes out of the water and record your observations.

Analyze Your Results

  1. How do the two groups of potato slices compare?
  2. Propose an explanation for any differences you observed.
