Chapter 4: Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) recommends that you should eat no more than 41 grams of protein a day. Americans, however, consume roughly twice this amount. Many studies have linked excessive protein intake to osteoporosis, kidney disease, and cardiovascular problems.

  1. What do you think is the major source of protein for Americans? Is this source from autotrophs or heterotrophs?
  2. What factors can explain why Americans consume so much protein?
  3. Why do you think health problems are associated with excessive protein intake?
