Comparing Haploid and Diploid Numbers
Chapter 5: Cell Division
The body cells of every species have a characteristic number of chromosomes. For example, humans have 46 chromosomes, fruit flies have 8 chromosomes, sequoia trees have 22, goldfish have 94, potato plants have 48, and dogs have 78.
Analyze the Data
- What is the correlation between the size of the organism and the number of chromosomes?
- What is the haploid number of a human, a sequoia, a goldfish, a potato, and a dog?
- What is the process that reduces the diploid number to a haploid number?
- What kind of cell contains a haploid number of chromosomes?
