Comparing Haploid and Diploid Numbers
Chapter 5: Cell Division

The body cells of every species have a characteristic number of chromosomes. For example, humans have 46 chromosomes, fruit flies have 8 chromosomes, sequoia trees have 22, goldfish have 94, potato plants have 48, and dogs have 78.

Analyze the Data

  1. What is the correlation between the size of the organism and the number of chromosomes?
  2. What is the haploid number of a human, a sequoia, a goldfish, a potato, and a dog?
  3. What is the process that reduces the diploid number to a haploid number?
  4. What kind of cell contains a haploid number of chromosomes?
