Testing for Fats
Chapter 30: Digestive and Excretory Systems

Nutritionists recommend that no more than 30 percent of your energy each day should come from the fat you eat. What is an easy way to find out if a food contains fat? You can perform an easy test if you…

Try This

  1. Choose five different foods to test.
  2. Using scissors, cut a brown paper bag into five 5-cm squares.
  3. Rub one of the food samples on a square of brown paper. Hold the paper up to the light. An oily spot on the paper indicates the presence of fats. Record your observations.

Analyze Your Results

  1. Which foods contain fats? Which foods did not contain fats?
  2. What can you conclude about the foods you tested?
  3. Did any of your results surprise you? Which ones?
