Hormones and Blood Sugar Level
Chapter 33: Endocrine and Reproductive Systems

The amount of sugar in the blood is measured in milligrams of sugar per deciliter of blood. Depending on various conditions, blood sugar levels vary throughout the day. A person had their blood sugar level measured at four different times during a single day. Here are the results:

 Before a meal   75 mg/dL
 One hour after a meal   130 mg/dL
 Two hours after a meal   115 mg/dL
 Three hours after a meal   80 mg/dL

Try This

Make a graph plotting the four different blood sugar levels.

Analyze Your Results

  1. What do you think caused the increase in blood sugar level? The decrease?
  2. How do you think the numbers might have been different if the meal included a very sweet dessert?
  3. What hormones control blood sugar level?
  4. What might happen if one of these hormones was not produced in the amount needed?
