Observing Succession
Chapter 36: Populations and Communitites

Whenever change occurs, new species move in and new communities develop. You can observe succession in action if you…

Try This

  1. Find a clean jar with a cover and place some dried plant material into the jar.
  2. Fill the jar with water and cover the jar. Place the jar in a place that receives indirect sunlight.
  3. Observe the jar over the next few days. When the jar appears cloudy, bring it into your classroom.
  4. Prepare microscope slides of water from different areas of the jar.
  5. View the slides under the low-power objective of a microscope. Draw pictures of what you observe.

Analyze Your Results

  1. Where did the organisms you observed come from?
  2. Was ecological succession occurring? How do you know?
