Acid Rain and the Environment
Chapter 38: People and the Environment

The acid in acid rain dissolves and wears away the surfaces of marble and limestone on buildings and outdoor sculptures. It also damages the environment, killing trees, fish, and other organisms. You can model the effects of acid rain on an outdoor structure if you…

Try This

  1. Cover your work area with newspapers.
  2. Use a nail to carve some lines onto a piece of chalk. The chalk will represent a statue.
  3. Place you "statue" in the middle of a shallow pan. Fill a medicine dropper with vinegar (acetic acid) and drip several drops onto the statue. Observe if there are any changes in your statue.
  4. Repeat step 3 five more times. Each time, observe any changes in your statue.

Analyze Your Results

  1. How did the vinegar affect your statue?
  2. Did the effects of the vinegar on the statue worsen over time?
  3. How do your observations relate to acid rain and its effects on outdoor structures?
