Logging Climax Forests
Chapter 38: People and the Environment

The logging of trees is a major industry in the United States. Trees provide important products for people. However, the number of trees in the United States is not endless. In fact, the Wilderness Society estimates that 90 percent of the United States' original forests have been logged. Many populations and communities live in forests. The roots of trees help control flooding and prevent landslides. Tress are also important in the oxygen-carbon dioxide cycle.

Trees are considered one of the United States' most valuable natural resources. The wood from trees has provided many products, services, and jobs for people. If logging is stopped, jobs would be lost, and the prices for houses, paper, and furniture would increase.

Analyze the Information

  1. Should trees in climax forests be cut down?
  2. What might happen to the organisms living in climax forests if logging continues?
  3. If forests are no longer logged in the United States, how will this affect people who live in areas where logging is a major industry?
