Predicting Evolutionary Change
Chapter 10: The Theory of Evolution

Populations change in response to changes in their environment. By studying changes over time, scientists can predict evolutionary change. You can predict evolutionary change in a population of insects if you…

Try This

  1. Work with a partner.
  2. Copy the data table shown onto a separate sheet of paper.

    Data Table

    Trial Number of Rabbits
      White Rabbits Brown Rabbits
    1
    2
    3
  3. Cut 10 one-inch squares out of white paper and 10 one-inch squares out of brown paper. The squares will represent the rabbits.
  4. Have your partner place two sheets of brown paper on a flat surface. These sheets will represent the environment.
  5. While you turn your head, have your partner scatter the 20 squares on the brown paper.
  6. When your partner signals for you to start, pick up as many squares as you can in 10 seconds. Record your results in your data table.
  7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 two more times.

Analyze Your Results

  1. What color rabbit is most visible in the brown environment?
  2. Which rabbits would have a better chance of surviving in the brown environment?
  3. What do you predict would happen to the population of brown rabbits over time?
  4. What would happen to the population of white rabbits over the same time?
