Fossil records are often incomplete. Depending on the type of organism, geological conditions, and type of sediments, you may find fossils that are clear and easily defined, or unclear and difficult to identify. You can experience the difficult task of reading fossil records if you
Try This
- Select two coins of the same denomination, one that has been recently minted and one that has been in circulation for a number of years.
- Place a sheet of paper over the two coins and rub a pencil or crayon on the area of the paper. Cover the coins to create an image of each coin.
- Compare the two images for clarity and for identification of surface characteristics of the coins.
Analyze Your Results
- Which coin produced the better image?
- What features on organisms are more easily identified in fossils?
- What kinds of organisms do not produce easily identifiable fossils?
