Predicting Puppy Color
Chapter 6: Fundamentals of Genetics
In dogs, dark hair (D) is dominant over light hair (d). How is hair color in puppies determined? A purebred dark-haired dog is bred with a purebred light-haired dog. Develop a Punnett square showing offspring in the F1 generation.
Analyze the Punnett Square
- Are the offspring dark-haired, light-haired, or both? What is the genotype of this generation?
- Develop a second Punnett square showing a cross of two of these offspring.
- What are the possible genotypes that result from this cross? What are the possible phenotypes that result from this cross?
- For each puppy produced by this second cross, what are the chances that it will have light hair?
