Comparing Linked and Non-Linked
Chapter 7: DNA, Genes, and Chromosomes
When genes for two traits are located on the same chromosome, they are inherited together. The linkage groups sort independently, but yield a ratio of phenotypes that are not the ones expected from the Law of Independent Assortment. If W represents wing shape and S represents body stripes, analyze a mating of two fruit flies with the genotypes WwSs.
Analyze the Data
- What are the gametes produced by each parent if the genes for wing shape and body stripes are located on separate chromosomes?
- What is the phenotypic ratio of the offspring produced from the pairing of gametes if genes for wing shape and body stripes are on separate chromosomes?
- What are the gametes produced by each parent if the genes for wing shape and body stripes are linked together on the same chromosome?
- What is the phenotypic ratio of the offspring produced from the pairing of gametes if the genes are located on the same chromosome?
