Model a Helical Virus
Chapter 14: Viruses and Monerans
Building a model gives you an idea of structure. You can make
a model of one type of virus, a helical virus, if you
Try This
- Study the illustration of the helical virus on page 331 of Biology: The Web of Life.
- Gather any materials that will help you to build your model. These might include a paper towel tube, pipe cleaners, a spring, beads, and toothpicks.
- Using the collected materials, build a model of a helical virus. Try to keep the sizes of the parts in relative proportion.
Analyze Your Results
- Identify the parts of the helical virus on your model.
- If you wanted to build a retrovirus, such as HIV, what modifications would you have to make to your model?
- If you wanted to build a polyhedral virus, what modifications would you have to make to your model?
