Model a Helical Virus
Chapter 14: Viruses and Monerans

Building a model gives you an idea of structure. You can make a model of one type of virus, a helical virus, if you…

Try This

  1. Study the illustration of the helical virus on page 331 of Biology: The Web of Life.
  2. Gather any materials that will help you to build your model. These might include a paper towel tube, pipe cleaners, a spring, beads, and toothpicks.
  3. Using the collected materials, build a model of a helical virus. Try to keep the sizes of the parts in relative proportion.

Analyze Your Results

  1. Identify the parts of the helical virus on your model.
  2. If you wanted to build a retrovirus, such as HIV, what modifications would you have to make to your model?
  3. If you wanted to build a polyhedral virus, what modifications would you have to make to your model?
