Analyzing Viral Disease Transmission
Chapter 14: Viruses and Monerans

Many human diseases are caused by viruses. The mode of transmission varies for each disease. The following table provides data which can be analyzed to compare body systems affected and modes of transmission.

Disease Tissue Effected Transmission
Smallpox skin droplets in air; direct contact
Chickenpox skin droplets in air; direct contact
Rabies nerves animal bite
Influenza repiratory tract droplets in air; direct contact
Polio nerves poor sanitation
Epstein Barr salivary glands direct contact
HIV/AIDS immune system body fluid exchange
Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C liver body fluid exchange
Common cole respiratory tract droplets in air; direct contact

Analyze the Table

  1. Which diseases are transmitted through the air?
  2. Which diseases can be transmitted through body fluid exchange?
  3. Which disease currently poses the greatest threat to human populations?
  4. Why do you think it is important for infants and children to be vaccinated?
